Which alcohol is best for keto eggnog? If you do choose to make boozy eggnog the best low-carb alcohols are brandy, whiskey, cognac, bourbon, or rum. If you want to make alcohol-free eggnog you can use rum essence, rum extract, or brandy essence instead.
If you love a classic eggnog cocktail with plenty of alcohol but have guests who prefer an alcohol-free drink, you can make keto eggnog then add the alcohol to individual servings, depending on who wants to drink alcohol.

Ingredients you need
To make a homemade sugar-free keto eggnog recipe you only need a few simple ingredients So take a look in your fridge now. You might just have everything you need to make homemade egg nog from scratch.
- heavy cream
- unsweetened almond milk
- fresh raw whole eggs – medium
- unsalted butter or salted butter
- granulated sweetener of choice – the most common sweeteners are monk fruit, erythritol, allulose, or stevia drops. You can use powdered sweetener or a granulated sugar replacer.
- vanilla essence or vanilla extract
- ground cinnamon
- ground nutmeg
Optional ingredients:
- brandy, bourbon, whiskey, cognac, or rum
- Garnish with unsweetened heavy whipping cream whipped to soft peaks and sprinkle with ground nutmeg or ground cinnamon.
How to make the best keto eggnog
Most recipes for egg nog require making a hot milk mixture then adding it to an egg mixture in a medium mixing bowl and whisking constantly while tempering the egg and cream mixture.
To make my homemade eggnog as easy as possible, you can make it in 3 simple steps. The full instructions are in the recipe card below and in the recipe video.
1: MIX: Place all the ingredients (apart from the alcohol) in a small saucepan on low medium heat and mix gently with a whisk whilst heating.
2: COOK: Heat for 3-5 minutes on a gentle low medium heat. Do not allow the eggnog to boil. The mixture will slowly thicken as the eggs gently cook. Whisk constantly to avoid lumps.
3: GARNISH AND SERVE WARM: Remove your cooked eggnog from the heat, stir in the alcohol if required. Pour each serving into heatproof glasses or coffee mugs, garnish with whipped cream, and a sprinkle of grated nutmeg.
Keto Eggnog FAQs
Adding alcohol such as dark rum, brandy, bourbon, cognac, or whiskey is completely optional. Always choose low-carb alcohol and avoid sweet sugary liqueurs.
If you are uncomfortable eating raw eggs, you can buy pasteurized eggs. But if you have ever eaten raw cookie dough, raw cake batter, or homemade mayonnaise, you have eaten raw eggs.
A regular drink is considered to be 1 cup (250 ml) but the serving size for eggnog is half a cup (125 ml).
You can replace the heavy cream for half and half and omit the butter will reduce the fat and reduce calories.
You can swap the heavy cream for full-fat coconut cream, unsweetened coconut milk, flax milk, or nut milk such as almond milk or cashew milk. But be aware of the higher carb value of some nut milks and always read the labels to avoid any added sugars.
You can make eggless eggnog with all the same ingredients below but omit the fresh raw eggs. Place everything in your blender or your food processor with a few ice cubes. Process and whip until thickened and you have eggnog slushy.
Instead of almond milk or any other nut milk, use coconut milk or swap almond milk for more heavy cream.
Yes, allow the cooked eggnog to cool then pour over ice cubes in a tall glass. Serve chilled eggnog with whipped cream and ground cinnamon or ground nutmeg.
Store the freshly made and cooled keto eggnog in a screwtop jar or airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. To reheat, place your eggnog in a small saucepan and slowly heat on low heat. Do not boil, your eggnog may separate and split.
Eggnog is historically an egg milk punch. Holiday nog cannot be called eggnog because it does not contain a certain percentage of eggs.

- 2 tbsp butter

Looks and sounds delicious! One thing: butter, especially when submerged in cold heavy cream, will not melt in 3-5 minutes” over low heat. More like a half-hour. Plus, you need time for the eggs to heat up gently and do their magical thing. I’ll give this a try though! Thank you.

Most LC recipes for egg nog serve 6-8, and I just needed one little old serving. So, I opted to reduce your recipe in half. As a commentor said above, cold butter in a nonheated pan will take about 15 minutes, alongside the egg, (if you wish to cook the egg, of course).
The result was very nice, and very close to non, LC egg nog. I will for sure make this again!!

The butter took less than 10 minutes to melt. I made a conscious effort to push it against the bottom of the pan while I stirred so that it’d melt sooner. I also stirred until the eggs no longer stuck to the whisk. One sip and .. mm-mm-good!! I’ll probably reduce the butter, too. I never thought I’d drink warm nog but it was fantastic! I’ll make a second batch and put it in the fridge to see how it tastes. Thank you for a great recipe!

I just made this and mine never thickened. I made the 2x recipe and heated it slowly. It was at 168ºF when I took it off the heat. Will it thicken as it cools or did I do something wrong?😬
It should thicken as it cooks and as it cools. Did you use fresh eggs or long life eggs?
