Slow cooker poached salmon is an easy way to get a very tender tasty salmon, without the fuss. To poach salmon you must cook it in liquid for a longer period of time at a low temperature.

This method makes the slow cooker the perfect tool for poached salmon.

Slow Cooker Poached Salmon

The texture of poached salmon is a lot more tender than oven-baked salmon. The fish is still flaky, but it is soft and moist.

Since the salmon is cooked over a longer period of time the salmon has the opportunity to be infused with the flavor of whatever other favourite flavors you cook it with.

Which Herbs Are Best With Salmon?

A few aromatics in the slow cooker while cooking the salmon is great way to add simple clean flavors to your fish. I like to place a few aromatic herbs or vegetables under the salmon so that the fish is infused with the flavors while it cooks.

Any herbs or vegetables that are strong in scent will work. My go to aromatic additions are lemon slices, celery tops, and fresh parsley.

You will want to line your slow cooker with foil or parchment paper for easy cleanup. Scatter a few aromatics at the bottom of the slow cooker. Then place the whole salmon fillet on top of the aromatics.

How To Season Salmon

You can use any seasoning you like on your salmon when you are poaching it in the slow cooker. For this recipe, I decided to add some Tandoori flavors. I really enjoy the earthy flavors with the salmon.

Beyond salt and pepper, I only added a few additional seasonings. I used garam masala, garlic powder, paprika, and cumin. Then I topped the salmon with several more lemon slices.

Slow Cooker Poached Salmon – What Liquids to Use

When poaching salmon, you always want to cook it with the skin side down. This allows the warm cooking liquid to more evenly cook the meat.

You will need to use a decent amount of liquid in the slow cooker to poach the salmon. The liquid you use should be a combination of water/broth and vinegar. One-quarter of the liquid should be vinegar and the other 3/4 of the liquid will be broth of water (1:3 ratio).

I chose to use apple cider vinegar and water for this recipe. You will want to pour the liquid to the side of the salmon to ensure it doesn’t wash the seasoning off the top.

How To Cook Salmon In The Slow-Cooker

Now that your salmon and cooking liquids are in the slow cooker you are ready to cook. You will want to cook the salmon on LOW heat for 1-2 hours.

After the first hour check the salmon with a fork to see if it is done. If the salmon is not done yet, place the lid back on the slow cooker and check back in 20 minutes to test it again.

You will want to check the salmon every 15-20 minutes after the first hour to ensure it doesn’t overcook. Once the salmon is done it can quickly start to overcook and turn grey, so check it frequently after the first hour.

Slow Cooker Poached Salmon

When your salmon is done cooking you can then cut the salmon and serve over a bed of baby spinach drizzled with a bit of extra virgin olive oil.

If you want to remove the whole salmon from the slow cooker you will want to use the foil or parchment paper to help you lift the salmon since it is fragile. Tilt the paper or foil slightly to let the liquid runoff then remove the salmon.

You will love the flavor and texture of poached salmon. Have fun mixing up the flavors until you find your perfect combination.
