What Is An Emergency Pantry Recipe?
I consider my pantry to include my baking cupboard (flours and sweeteners), my long-life cupboard (cans and boxes), my freezer (frozen meat and frozen vegetables/berries) and longer life foods that can be kept in the fridge.
These long-life ingredients kept in the fridge include dairy such as cheese and cream cheese which often have an expiry date of months, if not years.
So these recipes below will work if your fridge is still running and freshwater and power are still available.
But … if suddenly the power is shut off, what do you do?
- Open the fridge and freezer as little as possible to keep the temperatures low for as long as possible.
- Use fresh food first
- Use short-dated food
- Use food as it defrosts
- Continue to check expiry dates and do not exceed them. There is nothing worse than being in the middle of a disaster AND being sick with tummy troubles. Ain’t nobody got time for that!
